Book Bar Reviews

Updated: Oct 1, 2020

The Book Bar had an opportunity to snag ARC of “Real Men Knit” by KM Jackson and a new release of “A Piece of her Heart” by Iris Bolling.  I recommend both books for your reading pleasure.

When their foster-turned-adoptive mother suddenly dies, four brothers struggle to keep open the doors of her beloved Harlem knitting shop.

Jesse Strong is known for two things: his devotion to his adoptive mom, Mama Joy, and his reputation for breaking hearts. When Mama Joy unexpectedly passes away, he and his brothers have different plans for what to do with Strong Knits, their neighborhood knitting store. Jesse wants to keep the store open. His brothers want to tie off loose ends and close shop….

Part-time shop employee Kerry Fuller has kept her crush on Jesse a secret. When she overhears his impassioned plea to his brothers to keep the knitting shop open, she volunteers to help. Unlike Jesse, Kerry knows the “knitty-gritty” of the business, and together they make plans to reinvent Strong Knits for a new generation.

But the more time they spend together, the stronger the chemistry builds between them. Kerry, knowing Jesse’s history, doesn’t believe their relationship can last longer than she can knit one, purl two. But Jesse is determined to prove to her that he can be the man for her forever and always. After all, real men knit.

Review:  🧶🧶🧶🧶 Readers let me say the romance is there, but in my opinion, it was not the highlight. What I did enjoy were the many takeaways of overcoming the struggles, healing, maturing and adversities in keeping a small family business running in a world of corporations and franchising.

After being shifted from foster to family, Momma Joy nurtured these young men and they began to understand that blood is not necessarily an indicator for becoming a family unit.  After losing their rock, it looks like it’s time to throw in the towel.  It takes the unlikely brother, Jesse, the youngest of Momma Joy’s crew to fight for the importance of keeping the legacy of Strong Knits.

Real Men Knit, its unique family dynamic, along with the strong community bonds paint a picture of diversity at its best. It was refreshing to get a glimpse of men working in varied fields ranging from financial management to free spirit to admit to having specialties in the knitting game.

If you enjoy unique family dynamics and the strong bonds of communities try this one for your reading pleasure.

As a clandestine member of the Department of Homeland Security, Grayson Davenport from time to time uses his position as Director of the Davenport Foundation as a perfect front for assignments amongst the rich and powerful people he socializes with. His current mission is to uncover information regarding a conspiracy against the administration. To his surprise he finds himself a target of the conspiracy. The person assigned to protect him is a woman.

The moment they meet the heat between Grayson and Monique is instantaneous. Sparks fly causing them both to lose track of their mission. Monique knew this pretty man could never handle a woman like her. Just as Grayson knew this woman could not hold an intelligent conversation with him. Neither understood their reaction to each other, or the danger that had entered their lives. Now, Grayson and Monique must fight forces who are attempting to destroy the current administration, together. While Grayson is protecting her, Monique is protecting her heart from him.

Review: 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷

The long-awaited book of Monique “Spicy” Day has finally landed in our hands. It seems some of us may be surprised by her loved interest, a great match none the less. Now, the test is will she be able to protect her heart with the same tenacity that she protects her country!

In A Piece of her Heart, the author does a great job of tying up loose ends as she prepares for the final installment of the Heart Series. In true Iris Bolling fashion, through her words, she has a natural way of not missing an opportunity to give us teaching moments, especially our country’s state of affairs. I encourage you to savory this one, it has all your favorites; explosive emotions, steamy moments, action, romance, family and political drama.

I can’t help but think she has something else in store for some of these characters.
