The Book Bar had an opportunity to visit with Author De'Kari aka Khatari. We wanted to get to know a bit about the man behind the pen. I've read a few titles from the catalog of Author Khatari, and I can guarantee you don't close the book without evoking emotion. He has the uncanny ability to transcend you into the scenes of the story.
As a reader, keeping an open mind in our reading and trying new authors make for interesting adventures. It is my pleasure to introduce to you Author De'Kari aka Khatari!
MAB: Tell us a little about yourself...how you were drawn to the written word.
My love for writing starting when I was a child. I would use writing as a way to escape my surroundings and dysfunctional childhood. I also loved reading all kind of books so as I got older my love for writing continued and I decided that I wanted to be an author.
MAB: You are published under Author De’Kari and Khatari, what prompted the decision to have two pen names?
I guess I would say I wanted to get my feet wet and try something different. My books under Khatari have been romance and a suspense thriller different than my street lit under De'Kari.

MAB: What gives you inspiration for your book/s?
Real life events, people that have crossed my path and things I create in my mind.
MAB: Are your characters based on real people or did they come solely from your imagination?
Both, I would say 65% real life and 35% imagination.
MAB: Do you feel like it’s most important to have A) Strong characters B) Mind-blowing Plot twists or C) Epic settings?
I would say all of the above to make a great book. But most important I would say is the plot then the characters if I had to choose but as I stated it's all important.
MAB: What do you enjoy most about being an author? And what’s the most challenging?
I enjoy the fun of writing, creating something people will enjoy reading. The most challenging would be getting new readers and promoting.
MAB: Could you tell us a bit about your most recent book and why it is a must-read?
My most recent book is under Khatari, The Right Kind of Wrong. It's an urban love story. I believe it's a must read because of the uniqueness of the storyline, the authenticity of it as well as the characters. A lot of books about men in prison portray them taking advantage of a woman this one shows a man's vulnerability.
MAB: What behind-the-scenes tidbit in your life would probably surprise your readers the most?
All my books were written while incarcerated. Embarrassing to say, but true.
MAB: What advice do you have for other aspiring authors?
Never give up on your dream. When things get tough, keep pushing.
MAB: We appreciate the fact that you are not letting your circumstance define you as a person, and appear to follow your own advice.
